Lieutenant Commander Data was created by the cyberneticist Dr. Noonian Soong, the first and only such being to ever enter Starfleet. As a fully functional android, Data served as the second officer and chief operations officer aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D and later the USS Enterprise-E.
