The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted in Mirage Studios comic books in 1984, as Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael were being exposed to mutating ooze in New York City. The turtles were trained to be ninjas by a rat named Splinter. The comic inspired a franchise of five television series, six feature films, numerous video games, and a wide range of toys and merchandise.
