We get it, Game of Thrones is over for at least another two years, if not possibly longer. Though the show is due to start filming soon, it’ll be a long time before we’ll get our fix.
If you’ve been on this site for a while, you know we’re fairly obsessed with Game of Thrones. We have a whole t-shirt collection dedicated to the show, with pages of awesome Thrones tees for all our favorite quotes, moments, and characters. Now, while you’ll probably find me binge-watching theory videos on Youtube and rewatching the series from start to finish and probably re-reading the books…there’s still nothing quite like a fresh new season.
Well, we’ve got just the thing. Netflix is in to save the day with tons of binge-worthy shows that are just waiting to fill that Game of Thrones shaped void. Here are our top picks:
1. Peaky Blinders
If you haven’t seen Peaky Blinders yet, it’s totally worth a try. The show is set in Victorian England, and follows the story of a mafia-esque street-gang who sew razor blades in their hats. It’s all about the escapades of their leader, Tommy Shelby, who will stop at nothing to take every opportunity he can to move up in the world.
While it isn’t very long yet, it’s definitely worth a binge-watch. The costuming is incredible, the storyline is brilliant, and the characters are believable. It comes with all the drama that you’d expect from a show that’s meant to be a stand-in for Game of Thrones. This is one you’ll want to add to your List.
Oh man. If you know me, you know I love dystopian shows. Why 3%, you ask? What makes this show worthy of filling that Game of Thrones shaped void? Intrigue, intrigue, intrigue. This show is based in the (implied) nearish future, where 3% of the world’s population lives on the mythical “Offshore” – a place of incredible technological advancement, bliss, and opulence. The rest of the population lives in horrific slum-like conditions on the mainland. Every year, the 20-somethings on the mainland are put through a series of tests meant to determine the next generation of Offshore recruits, worthy of the utopian society awaiting them on the other side.
The show is riddled with questions and comes with a cast of characters who team up and are pitted against each other in turns. Sound familiar? It’s also packed with political drama and questionable morality. Overall, it’s brilliant. For English-speaking watchers, it is in Portuguese, but it’s worth watching with subtitles instead of the English dubs. This is definitely one to add to your List.
3. Stranger Things
We can’t say enough about Stranger Things on this site. We have a whole collection of awesome Stranger Things tees. The show revolves around a cast of (mostly) young characters living in a small American town in the ’80s. After a young boy goes missing, weirder and weirder things start to happen. There’s a monster, and governmental conspiracy and cover-ups, and a whole lot of atmosphere. It’s wonderfully nostalgic for those who grew up in the 80s and even the early 90s.
Sure, that’s all well and good. Why did this show make the list?
Purely for the cliffhangers. Game of Thrones watchers are familiar with just how binge-worthy their show of choice is. Stranger Things is no different. If you’re looking for something to suck you in and make you forget that you have two years to wait until the next season of Game of Thrones… this is the show to add to your List.
4. The Crown
This show is in here for obvious reasons: it’s all about political intrigue. While it might not have that fantastical twist Game of Thrones has, it’s just as good. It follows the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early years as Queen of England. It chronicles her political rivalries and romances and all the events that shaped the 20th and 21st centuries. If you’re into history, or even if you’re not – and you just like good acting and cool costumes, this show is worth trying out.
5. House of Cards
On the other side of the pond in terms of political dramas, you’ve got House of Cards. If you haven’t seen this show yet, you’ve got plenty of time while you’re waiting for that next Thrones season! House of Cards follows U.S. congressman, Frank Underwood, and his awesome (but conniving) wife, Claire Underwood, and their attempt to take Washington by a storm. The Underwoods want one thing: power. They concoct an elaborate plan to get Frank in office and to take down all their political enemies while they’re at it.
