With just over three months until the live-action remake of Fullmetal Alchemist comes to our screens, we’re freaking out. Warner Bros has released a full-length, subbed trailer, and it looks amazing.
The trailer gives us our first look at the show’s re-envisioned characters. Edward Elric uses his alchemy to fight his opponents. Alphonse looks incredible. It’s nearly impossible to tell that they’ve made the character entirely out of CGI – a testament to the cast’s acting abilities, as well as the sheer amount of work put in to bringing the anime to life. We also see other familiar faces, like Winry, Rock Bell, Maes Hughes, Roy Mustang, and the Homunculi. Envy, Lust, and Gluttony seem to have taken front and center of the story, and it seems that a fair amount of budget was spent on their CGI – which is a relief, given anime-adaptation’s track record.
Ultimately, Fullmetal Alchemist is a story about the journey of two brothers. When Edward Elric and Alphonse’s mother dies, they attempt to bring her back through an alchemy ritual. It went horribly wrong, and Edward Elric lost his arm and leg, and Alphonse lost everything, becoming simply a soul in a suit of armor.
Since then, Edward has been looking for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone: a magical relic that can restore him and his brother to their former states. Along the way, they team up with friends, and encounter numerous enemies. Their journey leads them along many different threads, and ultimately the brothers uncover a world of government corruption more horrific and deep-rooted than they could have ever imagined.
The film will debut in Japan on December 1 of this year. Can’t wait? Watch the trailer a couple of times and check out the rest of our Fullmetal Alchemist t-shirts below. There’s some great art by independent artists that you won’t want to miss!
