I was going to write an April Fools’ Day blog, but unfortunately the President issued an Executive Order outlawing the celebration of April Fools’ Day. So, instead, I’m going to write about the history of wheat. Wheat traces back to China in 2700 BC…
I had you going there, right? OK, maybe that was no Trader Joe’s going out of business or trailer for a Legend of Zelda movie. But it is pretty amazing how April Fools’ Day has been given a new life thanks to social media. It’s a little easier to fool people when you don’t have to hold a straight face.
As much as I appreciate a good social media prank, I think a few of them have grown tired. I don’t think anybody in their right mind would announce a pregnancy on April 1st. Even if they have a sonogram to prove it. As well as a marriage proposal. And if you are honestly thinking about proposing, I’d wait for a different day. But if you really want to commit to that bit, then why not wear an April Fool’s Day t-shirt instead?
Even funnier if you’re not seeing anybody!
But for social media pranks, try to think outside of the married/baby/moving box. And please, no celebrity death hoaxes. Checking in to some place your friends would never expect (like in my case one year, it was a tattoo parlor) may keep them guessing. If you want to keep up the pregnancy prank, check into a per-natal clinic. Or the local prison. Or heck, you can check into another part of the world. Just don’t ask friend to send you money.
Maybe your friends will fall for fake spoilers for favorite TV shows or movies. Somehow you got a big scoop on The Last Jedi. Found out Ben Afleck is quitting Batman and Kevin Spacey is taking over. A new Firefly series? Or claim a Blu-Ray has an Easter Egg of epic proportions and see if your friends are gullible enough to search for it.
Or heck, see if they’ll buy that you’ve been cast in a new television show. A spin-off of something because you look like a certain actor. Or got work as their stand-in.
Still, there’s nothing like a good, face-to-face prank. Everything from the evil mixing of M&M’s and Skittles, to unplugging or switching out electronic devices*, to the old fake bug on a lampshade. *If you want to be really mean, switch out somebody’s most used contacts on their phone (if you have access to it long enough). Instead of calling their significant other, they’d end up calling a funeral home, pizza parlor or strip club. Of course, I’m not that mean, but to each their own…
And why not be a walking prank this April Fools’ Day! Here are some shirts that can fool both friends and strangers.
And if you really want to prank (and possibly piss off) your geeky friends, here’s some mixed-up shirts you can wear. Or better yet, buy one for them as a gift!
But this April Fools’ Day and all the days that follow, remember the wise words of (the real) Obi-Wan Kenobi:
Or Dark Helmet:
Or some advice for fools in general.
And if you’d rather just hide home this April Fools’ Day, you can watch some old movies…
Keep on foolin’!
