When your wife, who’s been missing for three years, sends you an email out of the blue asking you to meet her at a derelict, probably-haunted farmhouse, you really shouldn’t investigate. Of course, that’s not what the protagonist of the latest Resident Evil game did.
Released in January of this year, the much-anticipated Resident Evil 7: Biohazard takes a path away from previous games in the series, focusing much more on true horror than action. The game uses a forced first person perspective camera that keeps the player in suspense as they work to uncover the truth behind what happened to the protagonist’s wife, solve puzzles, manage resources, and fight a new monster called the “Molded”. The game delivers an unprecedented level of immersion for horror gaming, leaving even the most courageous gamer on the edge of their seat.
Even though this Resident Evil installment isn’t necessarily focused on action, that’s not to say it isn’t filled with gore and a good deal of crazy boss fights. The protagonist, Ethan Winters, may be a civilian, but he’s armed to the teeth with an arsenal of weapons at his disposal. The player can choose from pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, axes, various explosives, and even a chainsaw. Pick your style and play at your own risk.
I don’t know about you, but I love survival horror games I can get myself immersed in, and Resident Evil 7 is just that. The game offers an incredibly realistic experience that forces you to face your fears. With the new first person camera, stunning environment, engaging gameplay, terrifying plot, and top-of-the-line soundscape, Resident Evil 7 is going to reshape the survival horror genre of gaming forever.
