Mega Man is Capcom’s most successful game to date, surpassing even Street Fighter and selling over 30 million copies. The franchise has had over 50 different games on different game systems. The classic series consist of 10 games, each continuing the story where the one before left it. They all feature different characters and settings, but they are all 2D side scrolling games, where you are an android (part human part robot) called Mega Man, who must defeat his enemies with the help of a mega blaster attached to his arm.
I’ll be honest here and say I’ve not actually played any of the classic games, but I did play Mega Man X, even if it was a long time ago (yes, I am old enough to have had both Nintendo and Super Nintendo. I won’t even mention Commodore 64, Spectrum and Amiga). I do remember that it was pretty damn awesome. The levels were still scrolling from left to right, and you were still blasting enemies with a blaster attached to your arm, but the game wasn’t easy, and it was incredibly enjoyable. The characters got stronger as the game progressed and the levels got harder and harder.
With Mega Man Legends the game moved to Playstation, and with that Mega Man moved to a 3D world in 1997, bringing it to a whole new audience and a whole new generation of fans. It has also had games on GameBoy, and the new smartphones, as well as a bunch of crossover games, like Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter vs. Mega Man, even a Mega Man soccer.
Unfortunately it seems like Capcom is trying to distance itself from Mega Man for some reason as it’s not really releasing any new games, so it seems like we won’t get a conclusion to most of the story lines. The only new games coming are various android phone games, which are usually in the genre of the endless runner like Temple Run. Which is bad news, but it will make you look that much better in one of these Mega Man t-shirts that really are a blast from the past.
